When I Was Young

My daughter's kindergarten class sent home "parent homework" on Friday, and like every good student, I sat down to do it the night before it was due :) Each of us (mom and dad) are supposed to draw a picture to illustrate a story of that begins "When I was young . . . ." It goes along with a book the class is reading. Both my kids love hearing stories from when I was little, and I tell them all the time. They have their favorites (like when the dying bat fell smack in the middle of our picnic table or when my Uncle Terry thought there was a spider on the wall and--in his attempts to kill it--kicked a hole clear through to the next room). But, when I got this assignment, I immediately got a picture of the story I wanted to illustrate and knew that I wanted to do it in fabric. So, I dug through my stash to create a picture of the summers when I would pick berries around my grandma's cottage:

I really liked how this turned out. When I showed it to my daughter, she asked if this was a competition we could win (she likes winning), so I think she liked it, too. I've offered to accept a commission from my husband to make his. We'll see.

Hi, I just wandered in from somewhere in blog land! I had to stop and say, I love this post and the little quilt. Will you make it into a doll quilt for your DDs doll?
I had a peep at some of your older posts too. You have made some wonderful quilts.

What a smart teacher to get kids interested in history by bringing up their parents' stories. This is specially important for parents who don't tell stories on their own. I hope your DH could make one as well. And how nice of you to take the time to make a nice picture to go with your memory.

Your fall quilt is lovely as well.

How super cute! Great job, and what a fun assignment! However, it does make me wonder about the dysfunctional families out there and how they'll respond or not to this assignment. Make a few extras and hand them out to the kids whose parents don't do their homework, OK?

That is so cute!! You certainly deserve first place :)))

And it is certainly an intersting assignment for the parents. It's great for the kids to see what all the different parents say and see all the difference with childhoods and cultures etc. That not everybody is the same.

What a great way to complete your homework!!! What fun.

Love your swap quilt -- the word fall hidden in the quilting is a really nice touch!

I love it too, isn't it funny how we can get things completed when they are in a medium we enjoy/understand! Tracey
ps love your fall quilt and I don't think it matters what others do,

You clever, clever mum! This is great. Your daughter will never forget that you made a quilt to tell a story for your homework (berry picking - yumm.)

I'm still laughing about Uncle Terry and the spider!
